This aria is from Mozart's opera, The Abduction from the Seraglio (Die Entführung aus dem Serail). In this scene, Blonde is doing her best to teach the brutish Osmin that if he truly wants to win the affections of a lady, he will have to use smiles, niceties, and tenderness.
But she has to be careful to not upset the lug because he happens to her new master. A troubling position that Blonde mitigates her way through in this piece.
I got assigned this aria when I was a sophomore in college at Wichita State University by the incredible Dr. Dorothy Crum. She always used to tell me that although I could belt musical theatre songs these were my "money notes."
I love singing those fun ledger line notes and always have a good time with Mozart's characters. I certainly hope you enjoy!
