Netflix is developing a new live-action Dungeons & Dragons series called Ravenloft — and this one is taking the franchise into much darker territory.
Unlike the lighter fantasy adventure audiences saw in Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, Ravenloft will explore the gothic horror side of D&D, with the story centered on Strahd von Zarovich, one of the franchise's most infamous villains.
The series comes from John August, who will write and executive produce, while Oscar-winning filmmaker Alfonso Cuarón is attached as an executive producer alongside Hasbro Entertainment. The story will explore Strahd's transformation from a tragic antihero into the vampire Darklord of Ravenloft, touching on power, love, obsession, tragedy, dark magic and his transformation into an undead villain.
And this could be a very different kind of Dungeons & Dragons adaptation.
We'll break down everything currently known about Netflix's Ravenloft series, Strahd's origin story, the gothic horror setting, John August and Alfonso Cuarón's involvement, what happened to Netflix's previous Forgotten Realms project, and why fans should be excited—but also keep their expectations under control.
