Tis the season folks! So we are going to get into the mood with the primary user map focus of the stream: Poison Heart. The author of this mod is Aymeric Nocus (ck3D / MRCK) who we've seen a few times on this channel, we tackled his newest creation, L.A. Meltdown 2047 a couple of weeks ago (go check that one out, it's amazing!) and now we go back to pull a snow themed level. Duke is out delivering packages as a postal worker, and just like usual, some Alien's decided his day just wasn't long enough. Afterwards, we run into the unscheduled maps based on viewer recommendations.
We took a trip to Super Mario 64 with Snowman's Land, but in Duke Nukem form by map author ToiletDuck64. We played another Mario 64 inspired level of theirs back in October with Big Boo's Haunt. Like that map, it uses some interesting TROR techniques to recreate stages from the 64 game that look simple, similar, but then you have to unravel how one builds a complete Giant Snowman wearing a gasmask out of level geometry in a game engine isn't 3D using level wizardry.
Then we slung on our trenchcoat and became Detective Duke Nukem in Winterfall by Sanek. This level creates a small town in winter for your to explore. Even though the map was very open, the mood it gives off makes you take it slow. The sense of scale reminded me of Lighhouse/BigLight we played, but horizontally rather then vertically. It was so well done.
As a added bonus, I threw in Outpost 31 by Tobias Fast, mainly because of the musical choice in Winterfall. This was originally released with no combat, and was intended to be more of a Build Engine Museum or Love Letter to John Carpenter's The Thing. It recreates the entire Outpost 31 with stock assets only, while expanding on it by adding rooms that you never see, but would make sense existing there in a remote research base. It reminds me of The Shining 2: Redrum in its dedication, which is a ridiculous thing to read if you aren't aware I'm talking about a Duke Nukem 3D map.
What we do in these streams is showcase user created content to show what kind of passion and creativity this niche community has crafted to show others what Duke Nukem 3D has to offer for any Retro Boom Shooter FPS lovers, or even old Duke Fans (like myself) who may have not dipped their toes into the user content world. Additionally, we take a look at how these 2.5D games create their 3D world from a level design perspective as I try to learn from those who came before me since I'm currently making a map of my own for Duke Nukem 3D using Mapster32, the included level editor for eDuke32.
