On April 23rd, around 5:00am, deputies were dispatched for a welfare check on a man stumbling along the sidewalk on Canyon Rd E in the 15600 block. When deputies arrived, they learned the male's vehicle was in the process of being towed. When the male saw the deputy pull up, he stumbled over to his vehicle, jumped in, and took off at a high rate of speed. Based on the deputy's observations, probable cause was established for DUI, and he was able to catch up to the vehicle on 144th St. E and attempt a traffic stop. The vehicle initially stops, but then takes off, and a pursuit begins.
At one point, the vehicle heads down a residential dead-end road and uses someone's yard for a U-turn while taking out their fence. It was decided that heavy traffic and dangerous conditions for early morning commuters prevented a safe apprehension of the driver, and the pursuit was terminated.
Further investigation led deputies to identify the driver and his location. Deputies arrived and located the suspect's vehicle parked in the driveway. A 45-minute-long standoff occurred outside the home while deputies wrote a seizure of persons warrant. Several times, the suspect would open the door and step out, tell the deputies to leave, and go back into the house. The suspect steps out a third time and can finally be taken into custody.
A Coors Light open container could be seen inside the vehicle. The 33-year-old male was booked for DUI, felony eluding, obstructing, resisting arrest, and malicious mischief 2nd degree for the damage to the fence. The deputy returned to the homeowner of the damaged fence and provided information and the case number.
