Shane Black took the director’s seat for the first time in his own adaptation of the 1941 Mike Shayne mystery novel Bodies Are Where You Find Them by Brett Halliday. Val Kilmer and Robert Downey Jr. are a private detective and an accidental actor, respectively, as they find themselves thrown together while Downey is conducting on-the-job research for an upcoming role. When Downey reunites with his middle-school crush, who asks him to find her missing sister, he relies on Kilmer to help him solve the mystery. Helmed with a tongue-in-cheek neo-noir pastiche, this action-comedy provided the perfect platform for Downey to restart his career.
