고층건물 화재, 드론으로 잡는다! 현장 투입 가능성 검증

With so many high-rise buildings all across Seoul, putting out fires in these buildings can be a real challenge.
And to overcome the limitations of traditional ladder trucks, authorities are now testing specialized heavy-lift drones that can spray water directly from above.
Cha Yun-kyung reports.

The blaze at the Coupang logistics center burned for a staggering 110 hours before crews finally brought it under control.
Despite mobilizing some 20 aerial ladder trucks, firefighters struggled to penetrate the facility due to its high ceilings and massive structural footprint.

"Normally, each floor has standpipe connections where firefighters can hook up their hoses, but these logistics facilities lack them entirely. As a result, crews had to rely on a large number of pumper trucks outside to force water into the building."

Currently, water streams from aerial ladder trucks top out at about 70 meters.
But with high-rise towers and residential complexes now soaring well past 120 meters and 30 stories, finding an airborne alternative is imperative.
In response, emergency authorities conducted a live fire-suppression test using specialized heavy-lift drones.
Tethered to a ground pumper truck, a heavy-lift drone lifts off vertically into the sky.
Once airborne, it holds a steady hover, spraying a continuous stream of water directly at the upper floors.
The core challenge lies in how high the drone can climb against strong winds, while withstanding high water pressure and the immense weight of the hose.
Based on test findings, the National Fire Agency plans to enhance flight stability and spray distance before deploying these firefighting drones into active field service.
