The historic Apache Trail has been re-opened and it does not disappoint. Starting at the town of Tortilla Flat, we took the Apache Trail (SR880) northest. On the drive, you will get to see Apache Lake and sections of the Superstition Wilderness and Goldfield Mountains, including Fish Creek. Fish Creek has not been accessible by vehicle for several years now, while the road was closed. You eventually come to Theodore Roosevelt Dam. We then headed NW on the 188, driving along Roosevelt Lake. After about 11 miles, you come to El Oso Road (FR 143). Take that SW toward Four Peaks, continuing up and over the saddle and eventually back down to the Beeline Highway. Total mileage is around 65~70 miles (Tortilla Flat to the Beeline Highway). The Apache Trail can probably be driven with a 2WD vehicle as long as you have decent clearance. I'd recommend 4WD (with clearance/high clearance) for El Oso Road/SR 143.
