Washington D.C. is the capital of the United States. Founded in 1791 after the American Revolution and named after George Washington, the first president of the United States.
The city, located on the Potomac River bordering Maryland and Virginia, had an estimated population of 702,455 as of July 2018, making it the 20th most populous city in the United States.
National Mall is the area between the Lincoln Memorial on the west and east to the United States Capitol grounds, with the Washington Monument and White House at the far end.
