ChuckPenn3 | Dressed to Kill (1980) Compromised Finale and a Cropped Character - Pan and Scan to Widescreen @ChuckPenn3 | Uploaded May 2022 | Updated October 2024, 1 hour ago.
I used the 1983 Vestron LaserDisc for the panned and scanned video of Dressed to Kill (1980), the same master originally released on Warner VHS and was used for broadcast for many years. This cropped version is how I first saw the film, so eventually seeing the film I cropped with the proper framing was like seeing it for the first time. The background widescreen image is from the 2015 Criterion Blu-ray release, which was scanned from the original negative.
The panned and scanned transfer was squeezed and oddly crops not just the sides but a good portion of the bottom of the image as well. The character of the woman in the restaurant overhearing the conversation about surgery was completely cropped out of the original video release.
