Basically what the title says. You can forget about calling yourself a dressage rider if you and your horse aren't on the same wavelength. No amount of force will ever be as effective as proper training, and not even the sharpest spurs and bits will ever be as good as trust and understanding.
After all, dressage is about ease (well, or at least it used to be), doing all sorts of fancy tricks and paces while looking as if you were really "just sitting" on the horse. Its origin proves that; no one on a battlefield had time or patience to get his horses' martingale checked or sort his extra reins out.
