In today’s tutorial, I’m showing you how to sew a simple and elegant dress sash! 🎀 Whether you want to add a pop of color, define your waist, or accessorize a special outfit, a custom sash is the perfect touch. It’s a quick and beginner-friendly project that will elevate any look.
I’ll guide you through the steps to create your own sash from start to finish, and I’ll even include the math so you can easily adjust the length and width to fit your needs. Plus, I’ll share my favorite fabric recommendations so you can achieve that perfect drape or structured look.
Fabrics to Use:
Cotton – For a casual, lightweight look.
Silk – Perfect for formal or evening dresses with a soft, flowy finish.
Satin – Gives a luxurious shine and smooth texture.
Linen – For a more rustic, natural look with some structure.
Chiffon – For a sheer and flowy vibe, ideal for layering.
Velvet – Adds texture and richness, perfect for winter dresses.
Taffeta – For a more structured, formal feel.
Math for Making Your Own Dress Sash:
The ideal length and width of a sash can vary based on personal preference, but here’s a simple formula to help you design your perfect sash:
Length:
Measure your waist or the part of your body where you’ll tie the sash.
Add about 40-60 inches (100-150 cm) to this measurement so you have enough fabric to create a bow or knot.
Example: If your waist is 30 inches, your total sash length would be around 70-90 inches.
Width:
The standard sash width is usually 4 to 6 inches for adults 2-4" for children
for Width of fabaric.
Width of sash x 2 + 1" for 1/2" seam allowance.
Length: Waist circumference + 40-60 inches (for ties)
Width (fabric needed): Desired sash width x 2 + 1 inch (seam allowance)
Materials Needed: Check the width of your fabric as you might need to buy more yardage to create longer sashes.
for example if you need 80" of sash you will need to cut two pieces of fabric thus making your yardage longer.
Yard of fabric is 36" x the width of the fabric, cut your strip of fabric from salvage to salvage (the factory edge)
