Every October 9th, Korea celebrates Hangeul Day, a national holiday honoring the creation of the Korean writing system.
This year, global admiration for learning Hangeul lit up the stage here in Seoul.
Our Lee Eun-hee brings the story.
Many people around the world find joy in learning Korean.
This passion is supported by the King Sejong Institute Foundation, a public organization under South Korea's Culture Ministry dedicated to managing overseas Korean language education and promoting Korean culture to foreigners.
Due to the growing interest in learning Korean, the King Sejong Institute has grown from 13 institutes in 2007 to nearly 250 across 85 countries, with over 7-hundred-thousand students.
The institute's annual Korean Speaking and Writing Contest has invited over 2-hundred outstanding learners to South Korea this year, and here are the nine writing contest finalists.
Dressed in traditional attire worn by scholars, the participants' commitment to mastering a foreign language shines through with every word they write.
"And here we are, the Korean speaking contest is about to begin. Let’s see how these challengers impress us with their skills."
During the five-minute speeches, the participants shared their journey of studying the Korean language.
"But one day, Korean came into my life and, in the blink of an eye, completely changed my life."
The speaking contest's first place was awarded to a rising star from India with dreams of appearing on Korean television.
"But over the past six years, I've done well as an interpreter while learning Korean, which has brought me to this moment. I feel great about it and hope for more positive experiences related to the Korean language in the future."
Contest winners will receive an opportunity to study at a Korean university next year.
"I participated in the writing contest and won first place. I'm incredibly happy and still can’t believe it. This feels amazing."
Their passion for learning Korean opens up new opportunities and serves as a stepping stone to discovering new dreams along the way.
