This film won't really make sense unless you watch it to the very end (and it's probably best to rewatch to understand everything better)
I shot this film in early January 2014 at the Hunter Valley Christmas Lights in NSW, Australia. I knew that they would make for some amazing shots so I got my young cousin to run around as the main actor (I had no real story at that point). I was using only one lens (the Canon EF 24-105) which was very slow at f4 in low light at the christmas lights. Everything was handheld and I was really experimenting with movement, editing and framing. My cousin did a good job considering he thought the film was going to be about something completely different! There were no "second takes" so it was a very raw, natural form. I was actually very proud of the final product considering this fact. If I missed a shot or screwed up a movement then that was it.
The "sparkler" shots were done on New Years Eve and I told my cousin to just grab some sparklers and run around putting the light near his face. This scene was partially inspired by "beasts of the southern wild" and I was really trying to emulate the emotions of a young child.
When I finally thought up the final idea for my film I had to drag my grandpa along to be the main actor. We did only one take for his scene and I should have done more takes because of exposure issues. He did a really good job though and I'm quite proud of all my relatives!
The score was written and performed by myself in a similar way to "The Boyfriend" score was. It was completely improvised. I watched the film and played along trying to emulate the emotions of the film. This took a few takes because this is not an easy task! I sent this film into two film festivals: Perth Revelation International Film Festival and SUFF.
For a no script, no rehearsal, one camera, one lens, one battery, one actor, one filmmaker, no sound film, I'm quite impressed at the end result :)
