In times where people have found increasing solace in, and drawn creative inspiration from, the natural world, we invite you to participate in ‘Drawn to Nature: Amber’. Join Museum Research Fellow Dr Ricardo Pérez-de la Fuente to learn about amber, fossilised plant resin, and the small creatures preserved within –namely insects– with amazing detail, before taking a chance to draw your own using the Museum’s specimens as inspiration with Q+A’s in this online, interactive science and art workshop. Make sure to have your art materials at hand to capture these serendipitous moments from the past yourself!
About the speaker
Dr Ricardo Pérez-de la Fuente is a palaeobiologist specialised on fossil arthropods, namely insects and spiders. Ricardo has lectured on palaeontology and entomology, and participated on numerous amber excavations. His research focuses on the study of amber and its inclusions, particularly those from the Cretaceous, one of the most important periods for the diversification of terrestrial arthropods linked with the radiation of flowering plants. Ricardo obtained his BSc, MSc, and PhD at the University of Barcelona, graduating in 2012. From 2013 to 2017, and before moving to Oxford, he was a postdoctoral fellow at the Museum of Comparative Zoology, Harvard University, where he gained curatorial and imaging experience leading the digitisation of a premier fossil insect collection.
