Stratigraphers record data about sedimentary rocks graphically in stratigraphic columns (and other ways, too). These representations usually use grain size as the "x-axis" and thickness as the "y-axis". In this video I map a photo of some turbidites into a stratigraphic column. This one represents only ~20 cm in thickness, which is rarely done - stratigraphic columns often represent meters to hundreds of meters of rock. However, this example shows the details of how to make a stratigraphic column "bed-by-bed".
