Hidden among the rugged Dragoon Mountains lies one of Arizona's most remarkable—and overlooked—historic sites.
In this episode of Cactus Atlas, we visit the ruins of the Dragoon Springs Stage Station, one of the best-preserved Butterfield Overland Mail stations in Arizona. Built in 1858 along the legendary Butterfield Overland Trail, the station quickly became the scene of a brutal murder that left three employees dead and another fighting for his life.
But the violence didn't end there.
Just a few years later, during the Civil War, Confederate soldiers and a young Mexican boy would also lose their lives at Dragoon Springs during clashes with the Chiricahua Apache, adding another chapter to the site's complex and tragic history.
We'll explore the surviving stone ruins, examine the historic graves, discuss the long-running debate over who is buried where, and uncover why this isolated spring became one of the most significant stops on the Butterfield Overland Trail.
