You can bus or drive from Morioka to the Hachimantai Mountaintop Rest House, and walk from there: goo.gl/maps/rstUT5GPaDAqjRM17

Lots of great hikes start here. It's an area only open from mid-April through November. The snowfall is so heavy during the winter that you can only get there by hiking for hours from the base with snowshoes or skis.
