A playthrough of Enix's 2000 role-playing game for the Nintendo Game Boy, Dragon Warrior II.
Dragon Warrior and its sequel, Dragon Warrior II, came to the Game Boy in 2000 in the aptly named "Dragon Warrior I & II" compilation cart.
Dragon Warrior I & II is a Game Boy Color game, but it's fully backwards compatible with the original Game Boy model. As such, it supported three different ways to play. The native GBC mode is in color, as you'd expect. When playing on a Super Game Boy, the game displays a custom screen border. And finally, when playing on a monochrome Game Boy model, you get what you see here.
As was the case with my playthrough of DW1 GB (youtu.be/4AsOkrDBcgk), I chose to do this one in pea soup green for two reasons: I prefer the way it looks over the color version, and there's not much footage of the game running in OG Game Boy mode kicking around. I thought that it would be nice to offer something a little different than what has already been done a thousand times already.
Dragon Warrior II is a good game, but I don't have much left to say about it at this point. I've already played it on the NES (youtu.be/onNy0JlNgi4) and SNES (youtu.be/yh1zZ6qV-54), and I outlined the differences between the Game Boy and NES versions of the games in my GB playthrough of Dragon Warrior I. A playthrough of Dragon Quest II as it appears in Enixs 1993 compilation for the Super Famicom, Dragon Quest I & II.
Since this version of the game was only released in Japan, I used a fan-made translation patch in this video. You can find the patch at https://www.romhacking.net/translations/6127/
After tackling the first Dragon Quests 16-bit remake (https://youtu.be/qUWFKwDJb4Y), I thought it would be fitting to shower some attention on the updated version of its sequel that came bundled on the same cartridge.
Dragon Quest II, originally released for the Famicom in 1987 and the NES in 1990, significantly expanded on the scope of the first games mechanics and plot. If youre interested in the specifics, please check out my write-up for the NES version (https://youtu.be/onNy0JlNgi4).
Like the first game, this remake of the sequel brings with it better graphics and sound, a streamlined interface, and it rebalances the difficulty to make the experience less grind-heavy. It provides a daunting challenge - the end-game beginning with the Cave to Rhone is still quite an uphill battle - but things are much smoother now thanks to the faster pace that battles play out at, the increases made to experience rewards, and the way enemies no longer spam insta-kill spells.
Although Dragon Quest II is arguably a less iconic game than its pioneering precursor and its revolutionary sequel, its still a good game thats made even better in its move to the Super Famicom.
(Sorry about the silence during the end credits! The theme that DQ2s remakes use for the staff roll appears to be a cover of a promotional single from 1991. Including it in the video triggered a flag from YouTubes irritatingly sensitive copyright scan, so I had to mute it.)
