Dracula is a new text adventure for the ZX Spectrum 48K, currently in beta. Its goal is to recreate the atmosphere and emotions of the first ZX Spectrum adventure games of the 1980s. It is now available in both English and Italian. The Italian edition intentionally has no illustrations and focuses on narrative, atmosphere, parser-driven play, and character interaction, because the richer Italian text uses much of the available memory. Players who want the full graphical experience can also try the English version. Feedback and impressions are very welcome: please use the Community section of the site for contact and updates.
With Dracula, DJ Soft opens a new production phase on the ZX Spectrum. The game stands in the tradition of the great text adventures of the 1980s, with the explicit aim of recreating their atmosphere, emotions, and style of play built on parser, imagination, and world-building.
The newly completed Italian edition is intentionally text-only: no illustrations, but more room for writing, atmosphere, and narrative detail. Players who want a richer visual layer can also try the English version.
The parser is at the centre of Dracula. The game goes beyond a minimal set of commands, supporting chained actions, more natural inventory handling, and richer interactions with characters.
This makes the adventure more expressive and more alive, giving the player's language a real role in exploration and puzzle solving.
Dracula is not built as a static sequence of rooms. The game world has presence, rhythm, and tension: locations form a coherent journey, objects matter in exploration, and characters help give the castle and its surroundings a life of their own.
The goal is not only to depict a gothic setting, but to make it work as a system, with time, movement, and consequences.
Dracula is built for the ZX Spectrum 48K and treats the machine not as a nostalgic shell, but as a creative constraint to be used fully.
In the Italian edition, the richer language and denser text use much of the available memory, so illustrations were deliberately left out to keep narrative depth and atmosphere at the centre.
Dracula is a parser-driven adventure. You play by typing text commands, letting observation, exploration, and object use guide the pace of the story.
