Dr. Robert—real name Robert Howard—is a British musician I’ve always admired, especially as the charismatic frontman of The Blow Monkeys. He came onto the scene in the '80s, when the band carved out a unique spot for themselves with this really slick blend of pop, soul, and a bit of new wave. But what really made them stand out for me (and for a lot of fans) were Dr. Robert’s sharp, socially aware lyrics. You could dance to the music, sure—but there was always something deeper going on beneath the surface.
"Digging Your Scene" was a global smash—it tackled the AIDS crisis at a time when hardly anyone in pop music was going there. And then there’s "It Doesn’t Have to Be This Way," which still sounds fresh and relevant even now.
Beyond the hits, the band was never afraid to take risks. They collaborated with Curtis Mayfield (yes, that Curtis Mayfield) on “Celebrate (The Day After You),” which was banned by the BBC during the 1987 general election—because, well, it was a little too on-the-nose politically.
Dr. Robert also went on to have a solo career in the ‘90s, exploring more acoustic, introspective sounds. And since The Blow Monkeys reunited in the 2000s, he’s continued pushing forward—not just resting on the old stuff but putting out new albums and still sounding great. Even Paul Weller once told him, “You’ve got no reputation as a guitar player but you’re f***ing brilliant!”
