Dr. Richard Petty, physician and neuroimaging researcher, explains how the brain is not a passive receiver of information but an active prediction machine. We notice so little of what actually surrounds us because the brain filters out what it expects. Only when something breaks that prediction do we become aware. Dr. Petty draws on his medical, biochemical, and psychiatric training to show how understanding the brain's predictive nature can deepen both our scientific and spiritual awareness. What we call a moment of insight may simply be the mind waking up to something it did not expect.
