The 17th Surgeon General of the United States, Richard Carmona, M.D., understands the importance of having the best scientific answers to provide the best policy in order to preserve the health, safety and security of our nation and the world.
Dr. Carmona successfully established the first trauma system in southern Arizona after being recruited as a surgeon specializing in trauma, burns, and critical care. He has served over 28 years with the Pima County Sheriff’s Department, earning distinction as a highly decorated police officer with roles including SWAT team leader and department surgeon. In 2002, he was unanimously confirmed by the U.S. Senate to serve as the 17th Surgeon General of the United States, completing his statutory four-year term in 2006. After his term, he became vice chairman of Canyon Ranch and president of the non-profit Canyon Ranch Institute, while also serving as a Distinguished Professor at two major universities. He currently sits on the Chancellor's Board of Advisors.
