The Summit for a New Global Financing Pact convened by President Emmanuel Macron is underway in Paris, bringing together world leaders and financial institutions to forge a new economic model to address three existential crises – climate change, nature loss, and resource insecurity. Conservation International’s CEO Dr. M. Sanjayan is participating in key discussions exploring multi-actor partnerships to mobilize ambitious financing to deliver the 2030 Agenda aimed at protecting 30% of land and ocean by 2030.
At the heart of these talks is a pioneering international initiative, the Country Packages for Forests, Nature and Climate, which aims to converge public and private funding for the conservation of areas rich in carbon and biodiversity.
At the One Forest Summit earlier this year, the French Government, the Rob Walton Foundation and Conservation International launched a 100 million euro seed fund to help jump-start this initiative and mobilize the private sector to protect vital areas of carbon and biodiversity at the speed and scale we need.
“To me these are the three things we need. We need seed funding to get countries prepared. We need large scale funding that involves philanthropy, private & public sector, all instruments possible for a Marshall Plan for Nature and Climate,” Dr. M Sanjayan said. And importantly, “You need Indigenous voices and local communities on stage participating, planning, directing because most [irrecoverable] carbon actually sits within the stewardship of Indigenous communities and local people.”
Climate, biodiversity and development challenges are linked – the good news is we can tackle them at once. And our seed fund aims to help make that happen.
