I destroy Dr. Joel Kahn's handwaving video about a Plant-Based diet and Heart Failure! The study he waved at the camera today was an a posteriori dietary pattern study, not a prospective cohort study, and a plant-based diet was *not* compared to an omnivore diet. Any healthy dietary pattern analyzed would have produced the same results between Q1 and Q4 adherents. E.g., the Alternate Healthy Eating Index (AHEI) or a Mediterranean Score containing lean meats, cheese, and eggs could have been used in the study interchangeably for this "plant-based" dietary pattern. And perhaps more importantly, the reduced risk for CHF goes away simply after adjusting for BMI in this study. This is typical of many of these epidemiological studies, where adjustment for healthy lifestyle factors (weight, smoking, exercise) greatly reduces or eliminates the statistical significance of the association of a dietary exposure to an outcome.
