Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde is a 1912 silent horror film based on both the novella "Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde" (1886) and on the play version (1887) of Thomas Russell Sullivan. Edwin Thanhouser produced the film. The story has been filmed in at least nine silent versions. Thanhouser's was the second U. S. film version, after Selig in 1908. This version differs from the previous as it downplays the horror element in favor of the thematic conflict between the good and evil sides of one personality.
