Dr. J - Julius Erving #6 Number Retirement Ceremony - April 1988 - Philadelphia 76ers - PRISM - An Evening With Dr. J presented by PRISM - The Philadelphia 76ers retired Julius Erving's No. 6 jersey on April 19, 1988 in a lavish pre-game ceremony at the Spectrum in South Philly. A sellout crowd of more than 18,000 gave Erving a two-and-a-half-minute standing ovation during the tear-jerking ceremony hosted by Dick Stockton. The 76ers unveiled a large statue of Erving that will stand outside the Spectrum.
Erving was joined by his entire family, and by former 76ers greats Hal Greer, Billy Cunningham, Bobby Jones, Henry Bibby, Steve Mix and Jack McMahon, along with NBA Commissioner David Stern and Philadelphia Mayor Wilson Goode, before his jersey was raised to the rafters of the Spectrum.
Erving, 37 years old at the time, retired the previous season in 1987 after 11 years in the National Basketball Association and five in the American Basketball Association, finishing with 30,026 points and a 24.2 PPG average, winning 2 ABA titles with the New York Nets, and leading the Sixers to the 1983 NBA Championship over the Lakers. #sixers #DrJ #juliuserving .
