The open research (a.k.a open science or open scholarship) movement has made tremendous strides in improving research practice and culture. However, wider adoption of open research practices remains elusive, while questionable practices and toxic work environments are a persistent and widespread issue. One reason is that comparatively little attention has been paid to the teaching and mentoring of open research, particularly at the graduate and post-graduate level. This represents a missed opportunity to educate and inform the future generation of researchers in open research. If left unaddressed, this could undermine the sustainability of far-reaching positive change.
Therefore, this conference aims to raise awareness about different approaches in teaching and mentoring that seek to train individuals in best practice and research culture while facilitating career progression in line with open research.
The conference has been separated into the following sections:
Teaching Open Research (12:15-14:35). We will hear from speakers and initiatives that will discuss different ways they have incorporated open research into teaching and what open source materials are available to help others do the same.
Mentoring (14:55-17:15). Speakers from different career stages and disciplines will highlight mentoring behaviours that can help researchers in their research practise, career progression, and to navigate their way through a highly competitive and challenging academic environment.
