How My Audience Saved This CAT D3 Dozer From Disaster. FarmCraft101 2023-06-23 | A HUGE thank you to all the folks who made suggestions. Dozer is better for it than I would have done solo. Several more repairs to do before putting this beast back in action. Some more important than others, and 2 could potentially save the machine from an early demise. First, the water temp gauge. Otherwise there is no way to tell if it is overheating. Second and probably more important, a new custom skid plate under the engine oil pan. Plus several others. What would the max tension on the extend chains be assuming the lift is pointing straight up, the fly boom and basket weigh 1200 pounds, and there's 1000 pounds in the basket, for a total of 2200 pounds being lifted?So far I've gotten several answers. One said that in worst case scenario there is a safety factor of 11.5, meaning the chain can hold 11.5 times as much as would ever be put on it. Another said that the maximum force the chain would ever see is 7000 pounds, while a single chain has a breaking strength of 23000, for a safety factor of 3+ even with only 1 chain. JLG Boom Lift Tear Down, Ended In Disaster! FarmCraft101 2023-03-03 | This is a massive job, especially doing it alone. I spent days researching, reading the service manual, and speaking with everybody I could before starting, so I had some idea of what I was getting into. Several JLG technicians from my awesome audience have contacted me and graciously offered their advice which has been really helpful! Thank you all! I start with disconnecting the control box and hydraulic lines on the platform, and then disconnect the chain tension adjusters and chains which frees up the boom sections. I remove the hydraulic cylinder with is 26' long!? Then I remove the mid and fly booms together. Finally, I remove the chains, and slide the fly boom out of the mid boom. The cylinder pin gave me fits the whole way, and ended up getting the better of me at the end. SMH. Is this why they say: If it ain't broke, don't fix it!? But it was broken. The telescope cylinder needs a rebuild as it was leaking causing it to drift when in use. Regarding the fire extinguisher, I don't know how old it was (no date on it), but it was definitely old. The gauge said it was in the green which I thought meant it would work. Extinguishers are supposed to be replaced or recharged every 10-12 years, and I suspect this one was older than that. The limbs above you are much more likely to break off, the wood may be weakened making the hinge more likely to break, there may be voids inside that you cannot know about until the tree is already falling, the tree can start falling at any time because it is weak, even when just cutting the notch. Fixing The Boom Lifts 4 Wheel Drive System and Other Stuff. FarmCraft101 2023-01-20 | My lift gets stuck way too easy, so I fix the hydraulic drive plus several other things. First I disconnect the dysfunctional hydraulic motor, cap the lines, and find it has more power. Then I fix the water temperature gauge which is much easier said than done. Finally I install a new spring brake assembly returning the vehicle to 4 wheel drive. For those wondering, McClinch is just the name of a company that owned the lift in the past. McClung is the name of a mechanic who I turn to to bounce ideas off of, and he has given me lots of advice on fixing this lift. We have joked that it should say McClung instead of McClinch because of all the help he has given me. Boom Lift Engine Repair. Can I Finally Fix It??? JLG 80HX. Ford LRG-425 engine. FarmCraft101 2023-01-13 | This old Ford engine has really put up a fight. Can I finally get it running properly? I review what I've done to it already, then we check the compression, fix some wires, put on a manual choke, try several cold starts, check for vacuum leaks, take care of some cows, and finally install a manual choke cable kit. Is it fixed? But there is more work yet to be done...Regarding disassembly of the boom, I should have explained more. All commercially used lifts have to get an OSHA inspection annually, and that inspection requires a boom teardown within the last 2 years. So every lift on every jobsite and every rental place has had the boom serviced within 2 years. JLG recommends servicing the lift if the machine is left sitting for longer than 6 months, for what that's worth. Not sure sitting idle would really warrant a teardown, but the last inspection this machine had was 2009. That last boom teardown may have been 2007, so 14-16 years ago. And the boom isn't working properly: it won't fully extend and retract properly as shown in a previous video. Finally, the telescope cylinder in the boom does weep a small amount of oil. I am powering 2 buildings which requires 2 transfer switches, I have 400 amp service instead of the typical 200 amp, and I have to provide controls for my solar array to avoid conflicts with the generator. Many systems would have built in functionality to work with a generator, but some will not, so figuring out how to deal with that took some time. Not too bad in the end, and we got it done. My Boom Lift Broke Again! Fixing It & Then Doing a CRITICAL Job With It. FarmCraft101 2022-12-16 | I have had to do a LOT of work on this machine since I bought it. I got it for a great price, but it's not seeming all that great now considering the time and money I've put in. It's never really run correctly, and I tackle that with many problems along the way. I clean the carburetor with an ultrasonic cleaner, adjust the carburetor, work on the telescoping chain and the boom, replace the coil and plug wires, replace the PCV valve, replace the crank sensor, the thermostat, the water pump, the coolant, the alternator. Phew! And there's more work yet to be done. IT NEVER ENDS! Good that I love fixing things! ;-). Installing a 2-Post Vehicle Lift And Other Big Shop Improvements. FarmCraft101 2022-12-09 | I start building roll-up tarps that easily enclose the space, like giant canvas roman shades. Next I run compressed air lines using Pex. Then the big upgrade, a car lift. When hooking up the power to the lift I also tap off a 120V outlet. Finally I add some brackets to reinforce the attachment of the roof to the building and do some siding work finishing off the addition. Nice to get another job totally done! How many things aren't going anywhere? 8. This Is What A $40,000 Porch Restoration Looks Like. FarmCraft101 2022-11-25 | Great deals on the Mango powerstation below. I've been working on this one for over a year. Huge job, but quite rewarding in the end. I set up temporary supports, tear out the old porch including the brick piers. I then dig holes and pour new concrete footings. New brick piers are laid, and new treated wood framing is constructed. I top that off with a shop made white oak tongue and groove floor, and paint it with linseed oil paint. Then lots of custom woodworking to make bases for the columns, and repair rotten areas. I put the weight back on the columns, remove the temporary supports, and then finish up with painting, caulking, replacing the stairs and making some big round-over molding. Phew! What did mine turn out to be? The most difficult one, of course! The swivel joint, also call a rotary manifold or rotary union. Excavator repair: No Power, Stalling, Fuel tank and Filters. Yanmar ViO-50 FarmCraft101 2022-09-30 | My Yanmar has a problem where it loses power and then stalls. It's worse the higher the throttle is set. I've tried running it with the fuel cap off and that made no difference. Changing the inline fuel filter helps for a while, but then it happens again. What can I do to fix this thing?Addressing some questions: Why not use rust remover? Haven't heard of that before, and won't it just rust again? I didn't want to experiment only to find that I somehow made the problem worse. Are all rust removers compatible with diesel?Magnets? Would certainly help, and I may do that if I continue to have problems. But they would require cleaning periodically. Would have to remove the side panel, and then the sending unit every time to clean. I could put a magnet on the side of the filters. I've never tried that before.Why didn't I put the second tee in the other orientation so both filters have a 90 degree turn, equalizing the bias? Because I'm an idiot, that's why. I should have thought of that, and will do so. ;-)What about electrolysis? Never thought of it. Cool idea, but it would also just rust again.But you didn't really fix it. True, but that's the nature of owning and running machinery. You have to pick your battles, and choose where your time is best spent. To really fix this, I would have to remove the fuel tank and apply a tank lining product that should be a permanent fix. If it continues to plague me, I will probably do this at some point. But it would be many hours of work just to get that tank off.Were those really sparks? Apparently some people think it was just light reflection. I don't think so myself, but I guess it's possible. I tried it twice more to see if I could repeat it and with the same camera and light setup, I didn't see the same result.
