Director of Photography Jeremy Benning, ASC, CSC built an Aputure LED lighting workflow for Season 2 of Cross, and the results speak for themselves.
Going into principal photography for Cross S2, Jeremy and Co-DPs Brendan Steacy, Maya Bankovic, and Claudine Sauvé faced a defining question: how do you transition an entire lighting workflow away from HMI and tungsten fixtures to LED without slowing down production? The answer was the Aputure LED Ecosystem.
From recreating soft morning sunlight pouring through police station windows to weatherproofing exterior night shoots in cold forests and rain-soaked city streets, Jeremy and his team relied on a versatile lineup of Aputure fixtures to deliver on every setup:
🔆 Aputure Nova P600c: Rigged along the length of the police station set to create a natural ambient glow through the windows, building atmosphere and immersing audiences in Detective Cross' world.
⚡ Aputure Electrostorm XT26: A high-output, IP65-rated COB fixture used for key lighting on stage and on location. Combined with the Spotlight Max attachment, it transformed low-ceiling practical locations with an even, bounce-lit glow.
💡 Aputure INFINIBARs: Battery-powered, magnet-mountable, and camera-friendly, these agile tools handled everything from hidden practicals and on-camera design elements to off-camera eyelights with softbox and grid attachments.
Change is never easy, especially on a professional production with tight schedules and high expectations. But through daily wins in setup times, lower wattage draws, and real-time problem-solving on set, Jeremy and his team didn't just propose the advantages of LED, they proved them. The result: a convinced production team, rental house partners on board, and a show that looks unlike anything else on screen.
