Cheyenne LinIn this video I talk about how kid and tween channels, like Disney Channel and Nickelodeon, have warped our sense of puberty since the early 2000s by getting rid of the preteen phase in order to control their young employees changing bodies to get more time and money out of them, and how that not only is detrimental to the stars themselves, but to the audiences that look up to them.
So let’s take a look back at Hilary Duff in Lizzie McGuire, Raven-Symoné in That’s So Raven and the Cheetah Girls, Miley Cyrus in Hannah Montana, Ariana Grande in Victorious, and many others to see how this entertainment has twisted what we think puberty and growing up should look like.

Liberal Optimism is the main rhetorical device of the Democratic party, as opposed to Republican declinism or doomsday-ism.
Instead of Make America Great Again, which implies the U.S. isn’t where it should be, Harris and Walz have ‘when we fight we win’, and pride themselves on this belief that the U.S. is worth fighting for, and that we can make this country work for everyone.
And though liberal optimism is good to have in theory, as optimism is just as good a motivator as conservative fear mongering, it’s hard to really get behind that under a two party system, where your enemy can undo everything you worked to accomplish every four years.
How can we have hope in progressing our country, when people who have the exact opposite beliefs can ruin it?
How can we support a party and politicians like Kamala Harris, who say they’re on the left and the opposite of Trump, when they’re just as militaristic and nationalistic as he is?
How have we reached a point in political history where both parties are centering their platforms and hinging their campaigns on this one freaking guy instead of real issues?
In the end, two party politics will lead us nowhere, and neither will liberals and their optimism or republicans and their declinism.
Without more parties being able to flesh out the ideologies of a nation, and as long as the republicans keep pushing further right with the liberals riding happily along with them, there just isn’t anything ‘left’ in America.

Patreon: patreon.com/cheyennelinHow Decline Moves an Empire: Nationalism and The Cost of Imperial PrivilegeCheyenne Lin2024-08-18 | In this video essay I talk about both meanings of ‘America in decline’. First I discuss decline in the literal sense, is the U.S. on the decline as a global superpower, economically, militarily and when it comes to soft power influence, as well as decline in the rhetorical sense.
Declinism in this sense refers to a rhetorical political device which is used to rally voters by inciting nationalism and love for one’s country by framing it as being on some sort of imminent collapse.
Either into fascism when it comes to the left, or into liberalism when used on the right - hence slogans like ‘make america great again’ or ‘america first’.
Lastly, I talk about how declinism and this fear of becoming ‘number 2’ on the world stage is ingrained into the American zeitgeist and psyche through literature and film, which frame the U.S. as its own worst enemy, and how that’s romanticized and poetic, but also scarily prophetic.

To insinuate that one can evade the male gaze by dressing a certain way only further works to slut shame women and to equate how a woman presents and dresses with her intelligence, adherence to feminist ideals, and if she is deserving of ridicule.
Feminism has no aesthetic because all women present differently, and that’s good!

Followers include tech bros and effective altruists like Elon Musk, OpenAI founder Sam Altman, and the Pennsylvanian couple Malcolm and Simone Collins, who say that humanity is doomed unless we procreate more, even though population numbers in the global south and low-income countries are growing. In fact, the population of the countries that makeup sub-Saharan Africa will become the most populous region in the world in the early 2060s.
But that’s not good enough for white pro-natalists because when it comes down to it what these pro-natalists are actually afraid of is the great replacement theory, or being replaced by so called ‘inferior’ races.
In the end, I dive into why pronatalism is the perfect Trojan horse to disguise some very bigoted and dangerous ideas, as through this ideology, they’re able to hide behind this facade of ‘preserving humanity’ and ‘saving the world’, and yet, they don’t think prosperity and population booms in historically exploited countries is worth celebrating.

I also discuss the ‘Lolita’ aesthetic popularized in the 2010s by singer Lana Del Rey and how the misreading of the character, as well the romanticization of the age gap in young adult fiction and media for girls and young women by other women exists as an outlet in order to explore a societal taboo that girls are very much aware of, and to help them cope with the patriarchal societal expectations of being a teenager.

Some say this was because Raj needed to learn that he didn’t need someone to complete him, but in my opinion that’s BS.
None of the other characters needed to learn that lesson, and in fact, Raj was the character who wanted a girlfriend the most, and honestly, deserved one the most out in that he seemed to at least try to treat women with some respect.
In this video I discuss the real reason why Raj ended up with no one and it’s not because he had to grow as a character, but because the writers hate him and are clouded by the bias against Asian men.

However, I don’t really hear Justin Bieber’s name come up in a lot of these talks and I wanted to discuss why that is - especially since Bieber is the blueprint of what it means to become famous via the internet.

I also delve into Bieber’s personal life and how the dream he was living was in fact, a nightmare, and how he’s coping with being a former teen icon and idol.

Ocean View - Dyalla youtu.be/KMctRcqmQhoThe Blue Eye Brown Eye Experiment - what went wrong?Cheyenne Lin2022-05-06 | The blue eye brown eye experiment is actually known as an exercise. The exercise was first done by elementary school teacher Jane Elliott of Riceville, Iowa in her 1968 third grade class. She wanted to make her all white classroom understand what racism felt like by splitting the group up by eye color. Elliott has said many times she was inspired to do this experiment after the assasination of Martin Luther King Jr. Word of her exercise soon reached Johnny Carson, and in May of that year she made her first national appearance on his late night talk show.
In the coming years the exercise would garner so much media attention that in 1970 she demonstrated it for educators at a White House Conference on Children and Youth.
She continued the exercise in classrooms until 1985. Afterwhich, she eventually became a diversity coach and seminar giver - doing her exercise with adults ranging from employees at IBM to prison guards and parole officers in state and federal prisons, and of course, making 5 appearances on Oprah.
Though Elliott became the face of LGAT (large-group awareness training) workshops in the 80s and 90s and tried to teach white Americans ‘how racism felt’, her lessons with adults largely turned into blame games and what we would know today as the ‘oppression Olympics’, begging the question - how good is this exercise and how well does Elliott, a white woman, understand racism?
In the end, Elliott is a pop scholar with no real background in race relations, nor does she ever cite any sources by Black scholars in her lessons with adults. Though her exercise might be well intended and one could make the argument that by seeing how angry the exercise makes people it’s ‘doing its job’, the real conclusion is that it’s just not a very good exercise that makes the audience reflect in any real way about their position in the world around them.
In this video I dive into Elliott’s story, as well as how her arguments and exercises really shaped how we talk about race and racism in the workplace, schools and our communities today, and how her exercise limits the scope of what racism is and how it appears.

With its character heavy focus on anti-hero Walter White it garnered a huge and diverse fan base, and Emmy’s to boot. It’s remembered today as one of the best TV shows of all time and I want to look into why that is.
In short, I think it’s because of how good the writing was in that the show didn’t go on for too long like some other prestige dramas like Lost for example. It started and ended in a predictable fashion, but threw in enough suspense and a few twists to keep us on our toes, but in a way that wasn’t jarring or gimmicky.
In addition to talking about the success of the show, I also dive into its themes on class, race, and gender, as well as take a look into characters like the titular Walter White, and his much beloved and hated wife Skyler.
