Denver, CO — On Friday afternoon, members from the unhoused migrant community, alongside organizers with Housekeys Action Network Denver (HAND), Colorado Palestinian Coalition (CPC), and Students for a Democratic Society hosted a press conference about an impending sweep of the encampment on May 8 and about the parallels with the newly established Palestine solidarity student encampment at the Auraria Campus.
According to a social media post by HAND and CPC, the migrant camp has faced police harassment while seeking more stable opportunities in a racist and unwelcoming political landscape. The post compares the experiences of the unhoused encampment to the foreboding threat the students at the Auraria protest camp are simultaneously facing while defending the rights of Palestinians to exist - and of course, the continued displacement and persecution of Palestinian lives in Gaza.

“I’m documenting and making statements about our society, social injustice.” That’s the mission that drives E.B. Lewis, an award winning illustrator, artist, visual storyteller, educator and father of three from Philadelphia. He’s taught for nearly four decades, has illustrated over 70 books for children, and has art galleries in France.
During a visit to Minneapolis, Lewis gave an hour-long presentation to an audience on the northside and sat down with Unicorn Riot to speak about his path to becoming one of the most important contemporary American watercolorists. “I am a Black artist, but I don’t look at my work as such.”
After nearly a half century of artistry, Lewis said in his work now that he’s “trying to make a difference.” “In the beginning,” he said, “I didn’t know where I was and what I was trying to do. I was just making imagery. And then I realized that you don’t become an artist until you have something to say.”
“The mere fact that you can draw or paint or play music or write or dance does not make you the artist. You don’t become an artist until you have something to say.” E.B. Lewis
Lewis said as an artist he’s on the periphery of society “documenting life … in constant observation of the world and in that observation, I want to leave something behind. I’m capturing, recording, documenting and leaving those little statements behind. And that’s important for me. I have spent a lifetime in art.”
There’s a very thin line between his visual storytelling as an artist and as an illustrator, Lewis said. As an artist of fine art, he’s working for more of a niche world audience. Catering to that audience, Lewis has two galleries in France carrying his work.

Shortly before 7 p.m. on Friday, June 14, a few dozen people started to gather in the center of Athens. Holding banners and flags, they set up a small stage, while tourists from around the world strolling through the Greek capital passed among them.
After a few minutes, as the crowd grew, a man in a black shirt came on stage and spoke. He was one of the survivors of the Pylos shipwreck, one of the deadliest ever in the Mediterranean Sea. It happened at dawn on June 14, 2023 in international waters about 75 kilometers (45 miles) off Pylos in southern Greece.
Officially, 82 people died, but hundreds of others remain missing to this day. Adriana, the wrecked fishing boat, had set off from Tobruk, Libya carrying an estimated 750 refugees and migrants from Egypt, Syria and Pakistan bound for Italy, including women and young children.
“We want all the guilty to be punished, and we want justice,” the man in the black shirt told the crowd.
Many of the survivors have reported that the sinking occurred when a Greek Coast Guard ship sent into the area attempted to tow the overloaded fishing boat to Italy. Both the Greek authorities and the European Border and Coast Guard Agency (FRONTEX) appear to have been aware of the dangerous situation of the Adriana fishing vessel since the morning of June 13, but did not launch a rescue operation.
