Last week at the Kalamath Street crossing, crews began rail welding as part of RTD’s Downtown Rail Reconstruction Project.
Using a process called thermite welding, crews fuse rail segments together with molten steel — creating a smooth, continuous track that reduces vibration and noise for a more comfortable ride.
Once cooled, each weld is carefully ground and shaped to ensure the rails are strong, precise and built to last.
