Roaster Kat | Double Take: Roasting Washed Ethiopia Grade 2 Refisa for Matchbook Coffee Project @roasterkat | Uploaded 2 years ago | Updated 1 hour ago
I had the opportunity to be Matchbook Coffee Project's featured roaster for April 2022! The theme for my box is "Double Take" and it's all about playing with perception and challenging expectations. In my box:
- 12oz whole bean, Washed Grade 2 Ethiopian from Refisa Washing Station. Grade 2 coffee is "lower quality" than Grade 1, but that doesn't mean it isn't delicious! This coffee shines as a single origin, and features a distinct brightness, delicate florality, and nuance that you *might not* expect from a Grade 2.
- 1 packet of instant coffee, using the same Grade 2 Refisa. Instant coffee has a (often legit) reputation as lower quality, less nuanced, and generally just bad-tasting. However, Black & White has developed an incredible instant program that allows the coffee to shine and maintain differentiated flavor (many thanks to instant genius Dan, whom you'll see in this video).
- a stress ball shaped like a coffee mug. It looks like a coffee mug but you can squeeze it, drop it, heck even throw it. It's not what it seems (ie: double take). Also I honestly just wanted a stress ball because life is stressful these days.
- a 20% off discount code ("DOUBLETAKE") and QR code linking to my publication's website (coffeepeople.org). It's all about celebrating the creativity of the coffee community, and holding space for the fact that coffee people are also multi-faceted, multi-talented, and super brilliant in other realms outside of their jobs as baristas, roasters, or whatever else.
- a trading card with info about me and the coffee (not shown in video)
Thanks for watching! Let me know if you'd like to see other videos detailing how I roast coffee, more info about Grade 1 versus Grade 2, a behind-the-scenes peek into how Dan makes the instant, etc.
