Another cool electronic track, originally composed by Viscra Maelstrom!
Just as I had done for the previous song from MAP08, I wound up layering my snares here as well (using the same signal chains too). I also decided to exercise a bit more restraint when it came to reverbs (compared to the previous track anyways).
I really like the gradual buildup that this song has. Starting with powerful chords on the piano, and just slowly introducing more and more elements. As always, I tried my best to keep things in the spirit of the original (with some changes here and there).
One thing that I had changed was the original's use of the square synth. At first, I was going to try and use square waves for that synth part, but as I messed with it I decided to try something else. What I wound up with was this combination/layering of four different synths. The most prominent of the four being that "breathy/airy" sounding synth. I felt like that "airy" sound was a good fit for the atmosphere of the song at that point.
Of course, I also needed to throw in some guitar parts (because I always feel wrong if I don't record any guitars in a cover!). This time around, my good ol' Strat gets more screentime!
I usually save the Strat for certain clean tones (such as the one used here). I also wound up using my Strat to record the distorted leads as well, which is something I haven't done in a very, very long time! I pretty much just noodled around and recorded what sounded good.
I was going to throw in some power chords, but it just didn't sound right. So instead, I combined three different lead parts together, panning them hard left, center, and hard right. I think it wound up giving the song that extra bit of "spice" that it needed for the climax!
Leading with the clean parts, and then bringing in the distortion (along with a heavily reverberated snare), just really makes things go from dreamy-sounding, to euphoric! I really enjoyed recording and mixing the guitars for this part, it was very relaxing to listen to.
Anyways, I hope you guys all enjoy the cover! I'll be taking a little detour and visiting a couple Duke Nukem tracks next. I've just been feeling in the mood for some Duke lately. Hope you all look forward to hearing those Duke covers! ~DAR

Its about time this channel finally got a Castlevania cover! Many thanks go out to Niko and to those that voted this one into 4th place during CB2.
I want to thank my friend Jodnafl, for making the initial request too. I also want to thank my friend Sam for (accidentally) pointing me towards the Dracula X Chronicles version of this track as well.
This one was actually quite a mess behind-the-scenes. I recorded the main part of the song, but got stuck because I wasnt sure where I wanted to go with it. I then wound up making the stormy intro bit before getting really stuck again.
I tried noodling around a bit to come up with some new lead parts, but it just didnt feel quite right. Aside from recording the harmonies, I had no idea where to go from there on.
However, thanks to my friend Sam, I wound up listening to the Dracula X Chronicles version of this track. I really liked what I had heard in that rendition, so I decided to incorporate parts of it into my own cover.
I really enjoyed doing the bit at 2:15. Im actually quite surprised that not many other people have utilized this part in their own covers. That whole segment has great metal potential, in my opinion.
I also really liked how everything hits at 2:00. I actually wound up using a whole bunch of sounds to create that impact. Some miscellaneous stomps and hits that Ive used before, but also utilizing some old, stock, thunder sound-effects.

Plutonia returns! So this one was fun and interesting. Weve got heavy metal mashed together with old-school rock (with a rock organ too)!
Really loved recording this one, especially since it feels like its been a while since I got to rock out and noodle around!
Structure-wise (until halfway through) and instrumentation have been kept the same as the original. In the beginning, I had an octave harmony going on, mainly since I think it sounded neat. I also threw in some power-chords for a little more impact in the beginning, but then I switch back to single-note riffing when the rock organ comes in.
Speaking of the organ, I actually wound up layering an electric piano underneath it as well. The electric piano had a bit of a delayed release time, so it wound up acting like this sort of reverb splash for the organ.
Recording the rhythm guitar and the bass was pretty quick and easy. Sweet and simple rock n roll! I was surprised that I managed to get both of them all recorded and done in one evening!
After having everything laid out, it was time to start noodling around and extending this track. Originally, the two new parts were flipped around. I had intended to have the first new bit be the part that closed out the cover. However, after listening to it, it didnt quite feel right, so instead of closing, I had it introduce the second half.
Had a lot of fun noodling around and making up these lead parts. All in all, I think this was a great one to come back to for the Plutonia marathon!

At long last, and once more, it is the end of an era for the channel. Just as I had done for the end of TNT, lets fondly look back on the entirety of the D64D2 Marathon!
I also tried to cram as many comments as I could into this one. Starting from the very first mention and suggestion to cover D64D2, and going all the way to the end! (well, minus the stat-screen, but thats releasing alongside this upload!)
This is arguably the prettiest song out of the whole soundtrack, and was why I decided to reserve this for the final song. Felt like this one was a great choice to be this marathons Legion of the Lost.
The original is an absolutely beautiful ballad, comprising of strings, piano, and bass. I tried to be as faithful to it as I could. I only changed a couple of notes, as well as added a few (for dramatic effect). As recording went on, I had gotten really into it, and things transformed into a nice rock ballad of sorts.
With my brain in 80s rock ballad-mode, I decided to pursue this sound further. Originally, I intended to have more realistic strings, but then I decided to layer stuff together (with effects too) and created some synth strings.
I was also excited about recording the bass, however, when the time finally came, I decided to go with a synth bass to stick with the sound that I was going for.
Its been a long while since I last had sat down to record a song on the piano. I think its been a year ago already, back when I did Distant Worlds. Had to capture that human element and feel, something thats hard to do if youre just placing down MIDI notes.
Absolutely loved playing every bit of this song. Even the acoustic, which I had shed a LOT of sweat to record. No fans or AC while recording the audio for that (recording the video was thankfully a different story).
Im also still totally on my whammy-bar kick, and given the circumstances and vibe of this track, I just HAD to open the solo with a harmonic dive.
I also changed things up for the drums quite a bit. The biggest thing being that big and beefy kick drum! Really wanted to have a nice solid thump (something I dont get to do too often since a lot of the times theres lots of double-kick shenanigans going on in a song).
Also want to give thanks and a shoutout to Niko, since I had wound up accidentally coming across his comment again over on my Endgame cover from DOOM 2. After re-reading that comment, I was inspired to throw in the bit at the end!
Anyways, I hope you all enjoyed the cover! Welp, see you all again for this in another 4 years for Plutonia... Just kidding! ~DAR

Oh man, you guys have no idea how long Ive wanted to cover THIS song! This has been on my Covers To-Do List since all the way back when it was just a humble .txt file. Im so happy to finally be able to cover this after almost 6 years!
Big thanks goes out to all whom have been voting for Metroid in previous COVER BATTLEGROUNDS! Also shoutout to longtime subscriber 6usfsd adsfe whom also suggested this song back 2.5 years ago during the first Cover Battlegrounds. Hope this one has been worth the wait! It certainly was for me, I remember just sitting at the start-screen and listening to this song all the time back when I was a kid. Metroid Prime was also my first Gamecube game (and yet to this day, I still havent actually played it all the way through! Ironic really...)
In some ways, Im actually glad it took me this long to finally get the opportunity to cover this track. I feel like with all the tricks and experience Ive picked up over the years, Im really confident in feeling that I was able to do this track justice.
As always, I really really wanted to try my best to keep true to the feel and spirit of the original. I wanted to maintain that spacey and electronic element, but I also wanted to inject some nice heavy rock/metal elements too.
First thing I really wanted to get down was the radio sort of sound effect. Of course after poking around, I came to realize the crackling and whatnot is supposed to be the sound of the Phazon material. I managed to luck out and find an audio-rip of the game and used the Phazon clip in there (link to the rip is towards the bottom here). I figured Id take the geiger-counter-sounding sample and try to run it through some granualizer. After a bit of fiddling and using an arpeggiator, I got it sounding pretty computer/radio-like. However in the end, I wound up just combining and layering all three sounds together; the modified sample, the original sample, and even the sound from the original song!
One of the things I always loved from the original was that guitar power-chord (with flanger) part that kicks in throughout the song. At first, I was also going to throw a flanger on to my guitar track, but I decided, no, it needs to HIT HARDER!. This was a job that not even a distorted guitar could satisfy! I had to bust out the BIG bass and crunch... the DC Murda Bazz synth/plugin (first came across this lovely thing back when I did my original song, Get Gored). After getting a nice, powerful, and dirty synth kick/bass, I layered that sucker underneath (or on top??) of the guitar. Then I threw on some other effects on to the guitar and automated them a little. Finding myself nodding along vigorously at this development, I pressed on to the other elements.
For some reason, I felt compelled to try adding some double-tapped guitar parts. Maybe its because Im still real excited about finally being able to get that sort of tapping sound now. I really enjoyed how the part wound up sounding, as well as how it looks when played in the video!
I also really enjoyed thumping out the bass parts for this cover as well! To back track for a moment, after adding that hairy synth kick/bass, I felt like no, it needs MOOOORE!, so thats why I went and plugged in my bass. Gave it a nice thump, but I felt like spicing things up a little... Before I knew it, I was already slapping out this almost Doomy sounding bassline!
Anyways, I hope you all enjoy the cover as much as I enjoyed making it! Also, it took incredible restraint to not go ahead and also cover the Menu Theme as well. It was sooo tempting, but I wanted to keep things fair for Cover Battlegrounds. Primes Menu Theme is DEFINITELY going to be the next Metroid cover that this channel gets! ~DAR

And here it is, the other Duke cover that I was working on! Shoutout to Raees for nominating and telling me about this song a while back!
Ah, Duke Nukem Forever... what could have been :(.
Anyhow, I had to get a little creative in order to extend the song a bit (the original was only like a minute and 17 seconds). I decided to create a little intro bit for the first 30 seconds, before busting into the main song.
I tried to follow the leads as close as I could, though I dont think I got it all completely accurate. I sort of did my own thing for the last bit of the leads as well. Then from 1:51 onward I decided to jam out and throw in a bit of Grabbag (ohhh one of these days, I swear Ill make a nice redux of it!).
Something of note that I did for this particular cover was that I chopped up the rhythm guitar tracks in certain places. Like around 1:05, I wound up slicing the clips to really accentuate those hits. Also reversed the clips for a brief moment around 1:49, and diced up the rhythm guitar tracks again for that lead up to 1:51. Im pretty sure Ive done this at least a few times in the past, but pretty sparingly though.
Anyways, man, this was such a nice and simple jam to rock out to! Hope you all enjoy the video, and hope you all look forward to the Spider-Man (2000) cover that will be up next! ~DAR

Short, condensed chaos, is how I would sum up this one.
I decided to just play this one straight, and keep it short since the level itself is small.
Only added some miscellaneous percussion here and there for impact, as well as a laugh sample from the one and only Vincent Price. Just felt fitting to throw that in there towards the end.
Those crazy leads also took me a little bit to get down, but I managed in the end.
Anyways, hope you all enjoy this quick cover! Were also finally nearing the last handful of covers in this marathon. 6 to go, and quite a few of the remaining tunes are slow and easy, so the marathon may finally reach its conclusion before the end of this month! ~DAR

And heres the instrumental version!
Now, time to go over interesting things I had done for this cover.
Originally, I was going to have the guitar in the beginning be completely run through a phaser effect. However, as the cover neared completion, I wanted that rawness that came with just that dirty guitar strumming. So, since I was already experimenting with sending lots of things to aux channels in the mixer, I figured Id do the same for the dirty guitar. Then from there, I wound up turning up the volume fader for that phaser-send channel, until it blended with the main guitar track. In the end, I was able to get the cool phaser sound on the guitar, but retain that grungy sound that I wanted.
Oh also, Ive found myself a new replacement for Biggus Kickus (my silly name in projects for any big epic reverbed kick/bass drums/hits). Rather than my usual go-to in the past (something from some old Roland soundfont, I think), I decided to mess around with some of the samples that came with FL Studio. I also tried some different cymbals and stuff too (also stock FL Studio samples), those things sounded pretty nice when reversed and combined with Biggus Kickus.
On the topic of drums, I didnt really change too much, except for moving some snares to land on the 2nd and 4th beats. It just felt a bit better to me having them there rather than where they were before.
As for guitar shenanigans, rather than save the distorted guitar for the very end like the original did, I wanted to come out with them right at the first chorus! The originals guitar part, while it sounded cool, I really wanted to have more movement and articulation. I had tried recording what the original had done at first, but wound up scrapping that. I decided to riff around and came up with a part that I thought sounded pretty cool.
I also changed things up a bit during 4:39 & 6:28. I had a hard time trying to figure out what all the guitars were doing in this part and so I kinda made up my own thing that sounded close enough. The original had a lead harmony that kicked in halfway through, but I decided against having it since I was already playing something different, and thought that what I had worked fine.
Now, something that bugged me a little about the original was how it just suddenly ended. Because after that part, it was really building up and up, and then bam, its already over. I was like aw man, well, time to give this a DAR-style outro. So I decided to have that short piano interlude play. The piano part is actually what I had the piano doing during the chorus, but with everything going on, it really didnt get to have its time to shine. Anyhow, I then had the guitar kick back in to launch into the extended solo! Mixing in stuff from the first solo, and then throwing in some original riffing, then I finally settled back on playing the main melody. I really had a blast recording the leads, especially the bit that runs from 5:51-6:10!
Other than all that, the last thing would be the strings. I didnt really change anything with the string section, aside make them stand out a bit more (at least to me anyways). Which is something I like about having this instrumental version. Without the vocals there, the pretty strings get the spotlight now (especially during the 2nd verse).
Oh, and the cover was done a semitone/half-step lower than the original.
