🧶 HOOK & SIP — What Do We Do With All Those Crochet Swatches?
What happens to all those little crochet stitch swatches once we’ve learned the stitch?
We turn them into something wonderful! 🧶💜
For this episode of Hook & Sip, I want to return to the original purpose behind this series: learning together and building our crochet skills by exploring a huge variety of stitches, techniques, textures and shapes of crocheted fabric.
Hook & Sip is our opportunity to experiment. We can begin with simple stitches and gradually work our way through beautiful textures, lace, clusters, shells, cables, bobbles and all sorts of interesting techniques.
But that leaves us with one rather important question...
What do we DO with all those swatches?
Well, I have an idea! 😁
Instead of making dozens of identical squares for a traditional sampler blanket, we're going to embrace the chaos and allow our Hook & Sip swatches to become a completely free-form crochet creation.
Our swatches don't even have to be squares!
We can make long rectangles, short rectangles, circles, triangles, granny-style pieces, flowers and all sorts of unusual shapes as we explore different crochet techniques.
And when two pieces don't quite fit together?
That's part of the adventure!
We might crochet an extra border around one piece. We could add a few rows to another. We might create a completely new little shape to fill an awkward gap or crochet directly onto an existing swatch to make everything fit.
There are no perfect rows, no identical blocks and absolutely no requirement for symmetry.
In fact, the more wonderfully mismatched it becomes, the better!
As the weeks and months pass, all those individual experiments will gradually become something much bigger—a free-form Hook & Sip stitch sampler blanket that tells the story of our crochet journey.
We'll be able to look back at the simpler stitches from the beginning and see how our skills developed as we tackled more interesting textures, beautiful lace, unusual construction methods and increasingly challenging techniques.
Eventually, we won't just have a blanket.
We'll have a record of everything we've learned together. ❤️
So start rummaging through those yarn baskets!
Choose one yarn weight for your project. I'm likely to use 3 weight / 8 ply / DK yarn, but you could choose something finer—or heavier if that's what you enjoy. Pick a crochet hook that works nicely with your chosen yarn and then use all those leftovers, odd balls and scraps you've been saving.
Bright colours? Absolutely!
Muted tones? Beautiful!
A carefully chosen colour palette? Go for it!
Every colour of the rainbow thrown together with absolutely no plan whatsoever?
Now you're speaking my language! 😂
But I don't want another blanket!
Who said it has to be a blanket?
Imagine turning this idea into the most wonderfully chaotic crochet cardigan or jumper!
Different stitches, different shapes and different colours could all come together to create a completely unique garment. You could even design it as you go, adding pieces until eventually you realise...
I've made a cardigan!
That's what I want Hook & Sip to become.
Not simply a collection of individual tutorials, but a long-term creative adventure where everything we learn has the opportunity to become part of something bigger.
A masterpiece.
An heirloom.
Or perhaps the craziest cardigan you've ever worn. 😂🧶
