IMT Portugal: can you get a refund if you buy property in Portugal before becoming a Portuguese tax resident? Under the new IMT rules, some non-resident property buyers may be able to reclaim excess IMT paid at the higher 7.5% rate.
In this clip, lawyer Daniel Reis explains how the IMT refund can work for people who buy property in Portugal while still waiting for their Portugal visa or residency permit. Once they move to Portugal and become Portuguese tax residents, they may be able to claim back the difference between the 7.5% IMT paid when buying the property and the lower IMT rate that would have applied to a tax resident.
