AI models can sound extraordinarily confident—even when they’re completely wrong.

Scott Hanselman demonstrates exactly why in this conversation by asking a local model for a fact it doesn’t actually know: his birthday. Instead of admitting uncertainty, the model keeps improvising.

That leads to a bigger lesson about grounding AI in real data—and an equally important lesson for anyone learning to code with AI.

Scott’s advice: use AI to remove barriers to creativity, but still learn the fundamentals. Understand HTTP. Understand DNS. Understand JSON. Learn GitHub. Look underneath the code AI generates.

You don’t need to “drive stick” every day. But understanding what’s under the hood changes your relationship with the machine.
