Looking for the cheapest way to run a mini split on solar? I ran a 12,000 BTU 120V mini split heat pump entirely on solar using two 590W panels and a portable power station with 43°F supply air on a 107°F day! I’ll show you why I think this setup can make far more financial sense than buying a dedicated solar-powered mini split from companies like EG4 or Airspool. This setup runs your mini split on solar power, banks the excess in a battery instead of clipping it, and doubles as RV and backup power when you're not cooling or heating the house.
Dedicated solar mini splits waste every watt your compressor isn't using. Mine coasts at 161 watts while 692 watts of solar comes in with that surplus charging the battery for nighttime runtime instead of disappearing. Set the power station to PV Priority UPS with a 20% cutoff and it runs off solar until the battery drops, passes grid power straight through to the mini split, then switches back the moment solar recovers. Uninterrupted cooling, no hybrid inverter, no permit, no electrician.
