My name is Paul Third and this week on mixing wednesdays I have another compressor plugin shootout as well as a digital plugins vs analog hardware comparison.
I have taken the sonible smart ai mix with soundtheory gullfoss and compressed the entire mix with a real neve 33609N compressor. I adore the sound of neve diode compression and audio plugins (especially algorithmic plugins) tend to struggle achieve that same width, depth, colour and punch in transient response.
Arturia compressors and also universal audio compressor plugins are normally well coded algo plugins so I'm really hoping that these can do better than the acustica audio navy and the cupwise 609.
The UAD 33609C buss compressor is very true to the hardware but the arturia 33609 plugin compressor has sidechain options, lookahead and also a drive function for more diode saturation so will be interesting to see if these plugin features make a big difference for all you audio engineers.
