This is a submission to Donkey Kong: Paintbrush Symphony; a Mario Paint community event celebrating the music of the Donkey Kong franchise. Submissions to the event can be found in a dedicated playlist on the MarioPaintHangout channel.
Well now, Donkey Kong 64. One of Grant Kirkhope's master-class soundtracks of the N64 era. There's a bunch of awesome songs on this soundtrack, but this one sticks out to me. This is the theme that plays as soon as you enter Hideout Helm. King K. Rool has been alerted to the presence of the Kongs and is firing up the Blast-O-Matic, taking aim at DK Isle. You're on a time limit in the first half of this level; it's up to all five Kongs to shut down the Blast-O-Matic before it destroys their home. Depending on how many blueprints you collected and turned in throughout the game, your time limit will grow from a measly ten minutes to a rather excessive fifty minutes.. Find the Blast-O-Matic's power source, play the Kong-specific minigames, and shut down the giant laser cannon.
This song is perfectly fitting for the tense, stressful atmosphere of finding and shutting down the Blast-O-Matic. Lots of strings at every octave imaginable, heavy percussion to punctuate the urgency of your mission, and some brass here and there to accentuate the threat level of King K. Rool and his giant laser cannon. This was a rather difficult song to do, mainly for its length, but also figuring out the best instrumentation to get the sounds I wanted. Also, recording issues reared up again, with instruments clipping and lag spikes. But, this is the end result, and I quite like how it turned out.
