Our video today is about a Tibetan Donkey fending off a snow leopard. A donkeys' territorial instinct is so strong that in many countries they are used to guard herds of sheep and goats against dogs, foxes, coyotes and wolves. Unfortunately, this territorial nature results in donkeys sometimes chasing and attacking small stock such as sheep, goats, poultry, cats and dogs. Sheep and goat ranchers often keep a donkey or two with their flocks, because a donkey can and will kill coyotes or wolves who come around to eat a lamb or kid.
Compared to horses, donkeys show limited fear response to novel situations and this can be mistaken for stubbornness rather than fear. Donkeys’ hooves are more upright, smaller, tougher and more elastic than those of horses. An average donkey of approximately 11 hands high or 160 kg can carry up to 50kg or 8 stones on its back or can pull up to twice its bodyweight on level ground. A video went viral in the past where a donkey destroyed hyena that wandered into its territory. In another video , pet donkey and pet hyena were having play fight, which turned serious later on and donkey fully dominated hyena in that fight.
This snow leopard thought that Tibetan donkey will be an easy meal for it and it attacked the donkey. But the tables were turned within no time, and then leopard had to run for its life. In Namibia farmers are keeping donkeys to fend off wild cats such as cheetahs and juvenile leopards. Guard donkeys are proving their worth in protecting livestock from predatory cats.
The donkeys are part of a successful strategy to reduce conflict between farmers and wild cats such as cheetahs, which also involves the deployment of thorn bushes and lion dung. Researchers found that only one donkey per herd could be used to make the strategy work and the herd had to be fewer than 100 cattle, "otherwise the donkey cannot keep control of the situation". So all in all, donkeys are one of the best solution to counter wild animals along with guarding dogs.
