Humans differ from other hominids in that we seem to be hard-wired to seek and give something Joseph Henrich called "prestige" to individuals who seem to have their act together. This might be the basis of Culture and, importantly, provides a completely different social hierarchy than the mammalian "dominance hierarchy".
