Dolly Parton, a legendary country musician whose music influenced many artists, has died at age 80, her nephew Bryan Seaver announced on social media Tuesday.
Parton is one of the most influential entertainers in American culture, with a career spanning music, film, television, business, and philanthropy. She rose to prominence in the late 1960s through appearances on “The Porter Wagoner Show.”
She then launched a successful solo career in the 1970s with hits like “Jolene,” “Coat of Many Colors,” “I Will Always Love You,” and “Here You Come Again.”
She won multiple Grammy Awards across several decades and was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1999.
She was also inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2022 after initially trying to decline the nomination because she felt she had not “earned” it in rock music.
Parton wasn't just a singer or a songwriter; she was an actress, a businesswoman and philanthropist.
She was awarded the Carnegie Medal of Philanthropy in 2022 in part for her work with the Dollywood Foundation, which she founded in 1988, to inspire the children of her home county and achieve educational success and decrease high school dropout rates.
Parton also created the Imagination Library in honor of her father, who was illiterate, to make sure that all children had books in their home from the beginning.
