In this video, I share my thoughts on Nouvelle Vague (2025) — Richard Linklater’s latest film that takes us behind the chaotic, passionate, and rule-breaking production of one of cinema’s most influential works: Breathless. Set in the heart of the French New Wave, the film captures what it truly means to chase artistic vision, even when it defies logic, order, and expectation.
Before watching Nouvelle Vague, I revisited Breathless for the first time and found myself questioning its reputation — admiring its influence, but not necessarily its execution. What intrigued me most was whether Linklater’s film would deepen my appreciation for Godard’s original or simply reaffirm its myth.
I discuss how Nouvelle Vague balances its gorgeous black-and-white cinematography, jazzy energy, and strong performances — particularly Guillaume Marbeck’s portrayal of Jean-Luc Godard — with Linklater’s signature hangout-style storytelling. While I admired its atmosphere, authenticity, and love for filmmaking itself, I also found the pacing uneven and the character work thinner than I hoped.
