A new documentary, The Encapsulation of Bience Gawanas, is offering audiences an intimate look into the life, struggles and legacy of distinguished Namibian lawyer, duplomat and social justice advocate Bience Gawanas.
The documentary, produced by Filmaker and creative director Othilia Tutu Mungoba, was screened in Windhoek on Friday, bringing together members of the public to reflect on Gawanas' more than three decades of service in Namibia and internationally.
The film explores Gawanas beyond her professional titles, tracing her educational and Christian journey, advocacy and activism, as well as the personal struggles and experiences that shaped her.
Speaking at the screening, Ailly Hangula-Paulino said Gawanas' story represents more than the life of one individual.
"Bience represents more than an individual. She represents a generation of Namibians who imagine being different, different in a country where they are different people and who can live together, committed and respected to live, to build Namibia."
For filmmaker Othilia Tutu Mungoba, the project ultimately became more than an account of Gawanas' achievements – it became an opportunity to understand the woman behind the legacy and the values that have guided her life of service.
"She has a mystical story to tell. I think she has a delightful story to tell. She's captivating, and there's so much that we can take away from her story. Whether it's being brave, whether it's being vulnerable, or whether it's being truly submitted to the cause of who you are as a Namibian."
The film highlights her contribution to legal reform, human rights, social development and gender equality, while reflecting on the broader questions of justice, reconciliation and nation-building.
The documentary also delves into Gawanas experience as a survivor of the Lubango dungeons during the liberation struggle while examining her decision not to allow that experience to define her identity or her contribution to Namibia.
"I have never denied that I am a Lubango survivor. But I don't want that to define who I am. I came back to Namibia, and I served my country to the best of my ability, with integrity," stressed Gawanas.
Gawanas has served Namibia in various capacities, including as Ombudswoman and Public Service Commissioner, and internationally as the United Nations Special Adviser on Africa, and currently as the Chancellor of the University of Warwick.
