The Doctor Who 50th anniversary almost went VERY differently.

Back in 2013, the only actor signed on to Doctor Who was Jenna Coleman. No David Tennant. No Matt Smith. No other Doctors. Just Clara.

Steven Moffat was genuinely preparing for a version of the 50th anniversary that could have been almost entirely Doctor-lite. Storyboards were being drawn, production was ramping up, and he still had no idea if any Doctor actors would return.

With fan expectations sky high, the pressure was on. Weeks out from filming, nothing was locked in.

Then everything changed.

David Tennant and Matt Smith signed on. And Moffat had one final, wild idea. What if there was a hidden incarnation of the Doctor? Enter John Hurt.

Suddenly, the 50th anniversary transformed into a global event.

But honestly… could a Clara-led special have worked?
