A 19-year-old sailor went into the ocean off the deck of the USS Abraham Lincoln, and the country only found out because his family said something. Today on ELLA: Black and Brown Women Disruptors in Healthcare and Beyond, Dr. Haydée Brown and Dr. Sonya Sloan do the exact same clinical read they do every week — except this week the patient is a warship. Five thousand sailors and Marines. A deployment scheduled for seven months that has now passed 260 days at sea, more than 200 of them without a single port call, a modern record for a U.S. carrier. Rationed food, compromised water and hygiene, and a mental-health crisis the Navy will not put numbers to. Two physicians explain why these are population-health problems, not "inconvenience" problems — then follow the supply line to a Navy logistics hub knocked out in February, a 2,200-mile reroute, and 1.5 million pounds of ordnance that still moved on time while the ship ran out of toothpaste. They connect it to Port Chicago, 1944, and the 80-year fight of Black sailors to be believed about unsafe conditions. The surveillance system for the health of 5,000 U.S. service members was not the Department of Defense. It was the families. Sources verified through August 21, 2026.
