Docker's rise is one of the most remarkable — and most haunting — stories in the history of technology. In 2013, a struggling startup called dotCloud gave away a humble internal tool that let developers wrap apps into portable containers and run them anywhere, identically, with just three commands: Build. Ship. Run. The world went wild for it. "Docker" became a verb, adoption exploded across every company on earth, and investors poured in hundreds of millions of dollars, minting the little whale as a billion-dollar unicorn.

But here's the nightmare hiding inside that fairy tale: almost nobody ever paid for it. The very thing that made Docker unstoppable — giving the best part away for free — made it nearly impossible to build a real business around. While the company scrambled to find a revenue model, Google's Kubernetes leviathan swept in and won the orchestration wars, forcing Docker to literally carry its conqueror on its own back. By 2019, the unicorn was quietly sold off for parts. Today, Docker the technology is immortal — running beneath virtually every cloud, pipeline, and deployment on earth — while Docker the company is a footnote. They built the future. They just forgot to save a room in it for themselves.
