Here's a look at Jim and Eris' discussion. Eris teaches dark arts at Spirit High, and convinces Jim he has the potential to be a great at the dark arts. A lot of mystery is shrouded with her, but she does reveal to Jim that she knows of his past, his clan, and just how much he can do. She suggests that he further his powers and attempt to summon that same demon again. Jim suspects she has something planned for him, and that the demon is not just a normal level 1 class demon. She's silent on that matter but says, if not to prove to everyone just how strong he is, than to do it to protect his friends, since they won't always be around to save him. She also says to Jim that if he's this weak, someone could die trying to protect him. Would he risk the lives of Milo, Jane darling, Jane Porter, Flynn Rider or Madelline? This gives Jim a lot to think about. I think you already know what he will decide.
