TRANSCRIPT:
In this lesson, Im going to teach you eight different expressions that you can use in
a business context to sound more professional.
Now, all of these expressions express the idea or convey the idea of important without
using the word important, alright?
So important is a very popular word, people use it all the time, but what we should not
do is to use it too often, alright?
Because otherwise, it sounds a little bit boring, and it also sounds like your vocabulary
is not very extensive and not very wide.
So lets see first what happens when we use the word important too often, and then Im
going to show you the eight expressions that you can use to replace these ideas and to
sound much more professional, okay?
So, lets look at this first.
Now, this is a sample letter that somebody wrote, its kind of like a letter of reference
for someone, and that person who wrote this, their vocabulary wasnt very extensive, okay?
Wasnt very advanced.
So they use the word important all the time.
So lets look at it.
Mary was an important person in the company.
She held an important job.
Her most important goal was to become an important expert in her field.
For five years, she played an important role in our department, making important decisions
and solving important problems.
I believe the most important factor in her success was her people skills.
Okay?
Now, obviously, on purpose, I used the word important in the entire paragraph to show
you what can happen when youre only using this word or when you only have that expression,
okay?
But now, Im going to show you how you can optimize this and how you can upgrade these
ideas with eight new expressions, okay?
Lets do that.
So, lets start with the first one.
So, if you want to convey the idea, express the idea of an important person, so what could
you say instead?
You could say a key figure, okay?
Say it after me, a key figure.
Now, in this case, we actually changed two words, right?
Instead of saying important, we said key, and instead of saying person, we said figure.
Now, figure can mean also person.
So, this business expression where two words, two or three words, usually two words are
used together.
This is also known in English as a collocation, a business collocation in this case because
its used very often in business English and business situations, okay?
Say it after me again, a key figure.
Good.
Now, suppose you want to give the idea of an important job, then you could say he has
a powerful position.
Say it after me, a powerful position.
Good.
She is a key figure, he has a powerful position, okay?
Good.
If you want to give the idea of an important goal, alright, or objective, you could say
this is a top priority in our company, a top priority.
Now, sometimes the word goal, priority not exactly the same, but the idea is basically
the same here, okay?
So here also, we replaced important with top, and we replaced goal with priority.
Priority is something that is very important, okay?
And in this case, a top priority, its an important goal, alright?
Say it after me, this is a top priority.
Good.
Okay.
Now, suppose you want to express the idea that she is an important expert.
Now, you wouldnt usually say that in any case, but what you should say instead is she
is a leading expert.
Say it after me, a leading expert.
That means there are many experts, and she is one of the top ones, one of the best.
She is the most well-known, a leading expert, okay? […] Speak Like a Manager: 8 Better Ways to Say “IMPORTANT”](https://i.ytimg.com/vi/V1Pj9xZHcpw/mqdefault.jpg)

TRANSCRIPT:
Im Rebecca from engVid.
In this lesson, Im going to show you how to get a higher score on the speaking and
writing section of your IELTS or TOEFL or PT or any other exam, English exam that you
might be taking, and also just a way to speak more fluently in general, okay?
And that is by using something called binomials.
Now, what are binomials?
Binomials are two-word expressions that are joined by a conjunction.
A conjunction is a word like and, or, by, and so on, okay?
Now, what are the characteristics of these binomials?
So, as I said, theyre two words, theyre joined by a conjunction.
Usually, they are the same category of words, so we may have a noun-noun, verb-verb, adjective-adjective,
adverb-adverb, okay?
And they have to follow a certain order.
You cannot really change the order because people are used to hearing them in a certain
way.
So, now, lets look at lots of examples, then after that, Im going to show you exactly
how to use them in an IELTS exam.
In the speaking section, were going to take eight different topics, were going to show
you how you can get a higher score just by using these expressions, and then well look
at a piece of writing and see how that is enriched by using these simple expressions,
okay?
Here we go.
So, first of all, what you see here is that binomials are of different kinds, okay?
These are just some of them.
If you look them up on the internet, youll see lists of lots and lots of binomials, okay?
But the categories are something like this.
There are binomials, which are synonyms.
What does that mean?
It means both words mean basically the same thing, okay?
So, if they mean the same thing, youre asking me, So, why do we need to repeat the word?
Well, because this is the beauty and the music of the language, okay, of the English language,
and sometimes we use these kind of pretty expressions just to make things more interesting,
more lively, more dramatic, more fluent, okay, and more expressive.
So, they could be synonyms where the two words mean the same thing, they could be antonyms
where the two words are opposites, they could be where one word is repeated after another word
for emphasis, or it could be some kind of advice, okay?
So, lets look at some of these examples.
Synonyms, pick and choose.
So, here we see two verbs, right?
I love to go to the library where I can pick and choose any book I want, okay?
Or, peace and quiet, two nouns.
I love to take a walk in the park because of the peace and quiet.
Or, bright and early, were going to see.
Here, these are two what?
Two adjectives.
Were going to see in our next section how we can use this expression, bright and early,
in one of your IELTS speaking questions, okay?
Very possible for you to use it.
Next, first and foremost.
So, first and foremost is a very kind of educated and cultured expression.
Its also used in a lot of business situations.
So, instead of just saying, First, I want to tell you about this.
We say, First and foremost, its like first and most important, okay?
I want to say whatever.
So, if you were to use this expression when youre speaking, when youre writing, its
an excellent way to begin any particular explanation or topic, okay?
In any part of your IELTS exam or TOEFL.
Okay, neat and tidy. […] Improve Your ENGLISH FLUENCY with BINOMIALS](https://i.ytimg.com/vi/Xv_-ZJ6EOms/mqdefault.jpg)
